Q.
Which of the following are likely to be found in deep thermal vents?
UP CPMTUP CPMT 2015Biological Classification
Solution:
The group Archaea includes archaebacteria, which are considered to be the most primitive prokaryotes. Archaebacteria are the only organisms that can live in extreme habitats such as thermal vents, hypersaline water etc. Archaebacteria are of three major types viz. methanogens, halophiles and thermoacidophiles. Methanogens occur in marshy areas and also in the stomach of ruminant mammals. Halophiles usually occur in salt rich substrata like saltpans, salt beds and salt fnarshes. Thermoacidophiles are the archaebacteria that have dual ability to tolerate high temperature as well as high acidity. They often live in hot sulphur springs and deep thermal vents where the temperature may be as high as $100^{\circ}C$, e.g., Thermoplasma, Thermoproteus.
