Q. Which of the following alkenes is most reactive towards cationic polymerization?

VMMC MedicalVMMC Medical 2008

Solution:

In cationic polymerization, carbocations are formed. Greater the stability of the carbocation, more reactive is the alkene. Since, the stability of the intermediate carbocation follows the order $ C{{H}_{3}}-\overset{+}{\mathop{C}}\,H{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}>C{{H}_{3}}-\overset{+}{\mathop{C}}\,HC{{H}_{3}}> $ $ C{{H}_{3}}-\overset{+}{\mathop{C}}\,H-Cl>C{{H}_{3}}-\overset{+}{\mathop{C}}\,HC{{O}_{2}}C{{H}_{3}} $ Therefore, reactivity decreases in the same order. Thus, styrene is most reactive.
