Q. Which is the correct symbol relating the hetero Kekule structure of benzene?

AIPMTAIPMT 1993Hydrocarbons

Solution:

Kekule in $1865$ proposed a ring structure for benzene in which the position of the three double bonds are not fixed. He suggested that the double bond keep on changing their positions and this is called resonance. According to Kekule, benzene is a resonance hybrid of two structures (a) and (b) and the hybrid structure may be represented as (c). The (a) and (b) are called resonating structures and are represented by putting $\longleftrightarrow$ double headed arrow between them.
