Q. Which is the correct decreasing order of stability?
(i) $CH_3 - \overset{\text{+}}{C}H - CH_3$
(ii) $CH_3 - \overset{\text{+}}{C}H -O - CH_3$
(iii) $CH_3 \overset{\text{+}}{C}HCOCH_3$

Solution:

Presence of -$I$ effect in a carbocation decreases delocalisation of the positive charge and hence decreases stability of the carbocation and vice-versa. Thus, the carbocation
(iii) having $-COCH_3$ group is the least stable, followed by
(ii) having $ -OCH_3$ group and followed by
(i) having only alkyl group.
