Delhi UMET/DPMTDelhi UMET/DPMT 2006

Solution:

Ecological pyramid is a graphic represents of an ecological parameter like number or biomass of individuals and energy.
On this basis they are of three types.
[a] Pyramid of number: It is graphic representation of number of individuals pa unit area of various trophic levels stepwise with producers being kept at the base.
The pyramid of number is upright in pond ecosystem whereas it is inverted in a parasitic food chain.
[b] Pyramid of biomass: It is a graphic representation of, biomass present in successive trophic levels from producers to carnivores. Pyramid of biomass s upright in grassland and forest ecosystem whereas inverted in the pond ecosystem.
[c] Pyramid of energy: It is graphic representation of amount of energy trapped per unit time and area in different trophic levels of a food chain from producers to top carnivores. Pyramid of energy is always upright.
