Q. Which ion is responsible for the hardness in water?

Solution:

The ions that cause hardness in water are $Ca^{+ 2}$ and $Mg^{+ 2}$ . They form salts with $HCO_{3}$ , $Cl^{-}$ , $SO_{4}^{- 2}$ ions which when dissolved in water, cause the hardness of the water.
