Q. Which amongst the following is the most stable carbocation?

AIPMTAIPMT 2005Organic Chemistry – Some Basic Principles and Techniques

Solution:

$CH _{3}- \overset{\underset{|}{C}H_3}{\underset{\overset{|}{C}H_3}{C^+}}$is the most stable carbocation. It is a tertiary carbocation.
The order of carbocation stability is tertiary $>$ secondary $>$ primary $>$ methyl.
Greater is the number of alkyl groups attached to $C$ atom bearing positive charge, greater is the carbocation stability.
