Q. When sodium $(Na)$ metal is dissolved in liquid ammonia $( NH _{3})$, it imparts a blue colour to the solution. This blue colouration is due to

TS EAMCET 2018

Solution:

On dissolving sodium (Na) metal in liquid ammonia $\left( NH _{3}\right)$ blue colour solution is obtained due to formation of ammoniated electrons which absorbs energy in the visible region. Reaction involved is

$Na +(x+y) NH _{3} \longrightarrow \left[ Na \left( NH _{3}\right)_{x}^{+}\right]+\left[e\left( NH _{3}\right)_{y}\right]^{-}$
