Q. When one litre one molar sulphuric acid solution is diluted with $ 5\,L $ water, the normality of the obtained solution is

UPSEEUPSEE 2010Solutions

Solution:

Concentration before dilution, $M_{1}=1 M =2 N$

Volume before dilution, $V_{1}=1 L$

Volume after dilution, $V_{2}=1+5=6 L$

From normality equation,

$N_{1} V_{1} =N_{2} V_{2}$

$2 \times 1 =N_{2} \times 6$

$N_{2} =\frac{2}{6}=0.33\, N$
