Q. When ideal gas expands in vacuum, the work done by the gas is equal to

VITEEEVITEEE 2006

Solution:

$W_{irr} \, = \, -P_{ext} \, \frac{R[P_1T_2 \, - \, P_2T_1]}{P_1P_2}$
During expansion in vaccum Pext = 0
$\therefore $work done = 0.
