When $HCl$ reacts with finely powdered iron, it forms ferrous chloride and not ferric chloride because its reaction with iron produces $H _{2}$.
$Fe +2 HCl \longrightarrow FeCl _{2}+ H _{2}$
Liberation of hydrogen prevents the formation of ferric chloride.
