Q. When glycerol reacts with nitric acid, in presence of conc. $ {{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}} $ , in cold, it gives:

JIPMERJIPMER 2002

Solution:

Glycerol, with cone. $ HN{{O}_{3}} $ in cold, forms an ester i.e., glycerol trinitrate, which is used in making explosives, (like dyanamite, cordite etc.) $ \underset{Glycerol}{\overset{C{{H}_{2}}OH}{\mathop{\underset{C{{H}_{2}}OH}{\overset{|}{\mathop{\underset{|}{\mathop{CHOH}}\,}}}\,}}}\,+\underset{conc.\,Nitric\,acid}{\mathop{3HO\cdot N{{O}_{2}}}}\,\xrightarrow{conc.\,{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}} $ $ \underset{Glycerol\,trinitrate}{\overset{C{{H}_{2}}N{{O}_{2}}}{\mathop{\underset{C{{H}_{2}}ON{{O}_{2}}}{\overset{|}{\mathop{\underset{|}{\mathop{CHON{{O}_{2}}}}\,}}}\,}}}\, $
