Q. When ethanamide is heated with $NaOH$ and $ Br_{2} $ the compound formed is:

Jharkhand CECEJharkhand CECE 2002

Solution:

This is Hofmann bromamide reaction. In this reaction amide react with $Bra$ and $NaOH$ to form amine having one carbon less than parent amide.
$ \underset{\text{ethanamide}}{CH_3CONH_2}+4NaOH+Br_{2}\rightarrow $
$ CH_3NH_2 + H_2O + 4NaBr + CO_2$
$ \therefore $ Methyl amine is formed during reaction.
