Q. When acetaldehyde is heated with Fehling's solution, a red ppt is formed. The red ppt is due to the formation of:

NTA AbhyasNTA Abhyas 2020

Solution:

Fehling's solution is tartaric acid complex of cupric ions. When it is heated with acetaldehyde, a red precipitate of cuprous oxide $\left(\left(Cu\right)_{2} O\right)$ is obtained.
In this reaction, acetaldehyde reduces cupric ions to cuprous ions.
When it is heated with acetaldehyde, a red precipitate of cuprous oxide $\left(\left(Cu\right)_{2} O\right)$ is obtained. In this reaction, acetaldehyde reduces cupric ions to cuprous ions.
$CH_{3}CHO+2CuO \rightarrow CH_{3}COOH+\underset{Red ppt}{Cu_{2} O \downarrow}$
