Q. When a strip of metallic cobalt is placed in aqueous solution of nickel sulphate, the reaction occurs as
Redox Reactions
A
$Co ^{2+}(s)+ Ni (a q) \longrightarrow Co (a q)+ Ni ^{2+}(s)$
B
$Co (s)+ Ni ^{2+}(a q) \longrightarrow Co (a q)+ Ni (s)$
C
$Co (s)+ Ni ^{2+}(a q) \longrightarrow Co ^{2+}(a q)+ Ni (s)$
D
$Co ^{2+}(s)+ Ni (a q) \longrightarrow Co (a q)+ Ni (s)$
Solution:
Cobalt $(Co)$ being more reactive than nickel, is oxidised to $Co ^{2+}$ and $Ni ^{2+}$ ions are reduced to $Ni$ by gaining $2 e^{-}$from $Co$.
