Q. When a solid is converted into liquid, entropy

Chhattisgarh PMTChhattisgarh PMT 2004

Solution:

Entropy is the measure of degree of randomness. As the randomness increases, entropy increases.
In gases, molecules are randomly arranged while in solids molecules are arranged in orderly manner.
Hence, the order of randomness is, $ \text {gas} > \text{liquid} > \text{solid} $
$ \therefore $ When a solid is converted into liquid, entropy increases.
