Q. When 1 mole of a monatomic gas is mixed with 3 moles of a diatomic gas, the value of adiabatic exponent $\gamma$ for the mixture is:

Thermodynamics

Solution:

$\frac{n_{1}+n_{2}}{\gamma-1} =\frac{n_{1}}{\gamma_{1}-1}+\frac{n_{2}}{\gamma_{2}-1}$
$\frac{1+3}{\gamma-1} =\frac{1}{\frac{5}{3}-1}+\frac{3}{\frac{7}{5}-1}$
$\frac{4}{\gamma-1} =\frac{3}{2}+\frac{15}{2}=9$
or $\gamma-1 =\frac{4}{9}$
$\Rightarrow \gamma=1+\frac{4}{9}=\frac{13}{9}$
