Q. What would be the number of chromosomes in the cells of the aleurone layer in a plant species with 8 chromosomes in its synergids?

AIPMTAIPMT 2006Morphology of Flowering Plants

Solution:

Aleurone layer is proteinaceous outermost layer of endosperm found in seeds of graminae and polygonaceae. The cells of this layer contain aleurone grains which store protein to be used later by the developing embryo. Synergids are haploid in nature. So if 8 chromosomes are present in synergids, then the endosperm will have 3n = 24 chromosomes. The endosperm is triploid in nature.
