Q. What will be the enthalpy of combustion of carbon to produce carbon monoxide on the basis of data given below :
$C_{\left(s\right)}+O_{2\left(g\right)} \to CO_{2\left(g\right)} - 393.4\,kJ$
$CO_{\left(g\right)}+\frac{1}{2}O_{2\left(g\right)} - 283.0\,kJ$

Thermodynamics

Solution:

$C+\frac{1}{2}O_{2} \to CO$ is obtained by $\left(i\right) - \left(ii\right)$.
$-393.4-\left(-283.0\right) =-110.4\, kj$
