Q. What is the relationship between the parent and daughter nuclei, when a nucleus of an atom undergoes beta emission?

J & K CETJ & K CET 2010

Solution:

When a $\beta$ - particle is emitted, the atomic number is increased by one while atomic mass (mass number) remains unchanged,
ie,${ }_{Z} X^{A} \xrightarrow{-\beta} Z+1 X^{A}$
Since, the species having same mass number but different atomic number, are called isobars, thus, the parent and daughter nuclei (which is formed after emission of $\beta$ - particle) are isobars.
