Q. What is the net gain of ATP in glycolysis?

NTA AbhyasNTA Abhyas 2020Respiration in Plants

Solution:

Glycolysis produces four ATP as a gross gain, out of which 2 ATP are used as compensation for the used ATP. Two ATP are consumed in the preparatory phase of glycolysis. One ATP is used in the conversion of glucose to glucose-6-phosphate and other ATP is used in conversion of fructose-6-phosphate to fructose-1,6-biphosphate. Hence, the actual ATP gain from this reaction is 2 ATP.
