Q. What is the modulation index of an FM signal having a carrier swing of $100 \, kHz$ when the modulating signal has a frequency of $8 \, kHz$ ?

Solution:

Given: Carrier Swing $=100 \, kHz$
$f_{a}=8 \, kHz$
From the defining equation,
$m_{f}=\frac{\Delta f}{f_{a}}$
First determining $\Delta f$ ,
$\Delta f=\frac{C a r r i e r \, S w i n g}{2}$
$=\frac{100 \times 10^{3}}{2}$
$=50 \, kHz$
Now substituting into the equation for $m_{f}$
$m_{f}=\frac{50 \times 10^{3}}{8 \times 10^{3}}$
$=6.25$
