Q. What is the initial product of the acidic hydrolysis of a cyanide?

BHUBHU 2009

Solution:

Acidic hydrolysis of a cyanide gives a primary amide as the initial product. Further hydrolysis of amide gives carboxylic acid.
$R- CN \ce{->[{ H _{2} O , H ^{+}}]} \underset{\text{primary amide}}{R- CONH _{2}} \ce{->[{ H _{2} O , H ^{+}}]}$
