Q. What is the correct relationship between the $pHs$ of isomolar solutions of sodium oxide $ (pH_1), $ sodium sulphide $ (pH_2), $ sodium selenide $ (pH_3) $ and sodium telluride $ (pH_4) $ ?

AIIMSAIIMS 2008The p-Block Elements - Part2

Solution:

l $Na _{2} O + H _{2} O \rightarrow 2 NaOH$

ll $Na _{2} S + H _{2} O \rightarrow 2 NaOH + H _{2} S$

llI $Na _{2} Se + H _{2} O \rightarrow 2 NaOH + H _{2} Se$

IV $Na _{2} Te + H _{2} O \rightarrow 2 NaOH + H _{2} Te$

will have the highest pH. Among $H _{2} S,\, H _{2} Se$,

$H _{2}$ Te acidity goes on increasing on going down the group as bond length increases on increasing size of central atom.
So, $pH _{4}< pH _{3}< pH _{2}$

Overall order is $pH _{1}> pH _{2}> pH _{3}> pH _{4}$
