Q. What is the catalyst used for oxidation of $SO_2$ to $SO_3$ in lead chamber process for manufacture of sulphuric acid?

MHT CETMHT CET 2018The p-Block Elements - Part2

Solution:

In lead chamber process, a mixture containing $SO _{2}$, air NO is treated with steam $\left( H _{2} O \right)$.

In this reaction, NO (nitric oxide) act as a catalyst.

$2 SO _{2}+\underset{\text { (From air) }}{ O _{2}}+2 H _{2} O +\underset{\text { Catalyst }}{[ NO ]} \to 2 H _{2} SO _{4}+\underset{\text { Catalyst }}{[ NO ]}$
