Q. What is the amount of work done when $0.5$ mole of methane, $CH_{4 \,(g)}$, is subjected to combustion at $300\, K$ ? (given, $R = 8.314 \,J \,K^{-1}\, mol^{-1}$)

MHT CETMHT CET 2016

Solution:

$0.5 CH _{4}(g)+ O _{2}(g) \rightarrow 0.5 CO _{2}(g)+ H _{2} O (l)$

$\Delta n=0.5-1.5=-1$

Work done

$=-\Delta n R T=-(-1)^{*} 8.314 \times 30=2494 J$
