Q. What does cellulose give on complete hydrolysis?

NTA AbhyasNTA Abhyas 2020Biomolecules

Solution:

Cellulose is a linear polymer of $\beta -D-$ glucose in which $C_{1}$ of one glucose unit is connected to $C_{4}$ of the other through glycosidic linkage.

Solution

It does not undergo hydrolysis easily. However on heating with dilute $H_{2}SO_{4}$ under pressure. It does undergo hydrolysis to give only $D-$ glucose.

$\left(C_{6} H_{10} O_{5}\right)_{n}+\left(nH\right)_{2}O\overset{H^{+}}{ \rightarrow }\underset{D - Glucose}{2 C_{6} H_{12} O_{6}}$
