Q. Wacker process is an industrial process for the oxidation of terminal alkenes. Which of the following represents a true statement about the product?

UPSEEUPSEE 2011Hydrocarbons

Solution:

Alkene can directly be oxidised to their corresponding aldehydes and ketones by treating them with a solution of $\operatorname{PdCl}_{2}$ containing a catalytic amount of $CuCl _{2}$ in the presence of air or oxygen. This process is known as Wacker process.

$CH _{2}= CH _{2}+ H _{2} O + PdCl _{2} \frac{ CuCl _{2} /}{\text { air or } O _{2}}$

$CH _{3} CHO + Pd +2 HCl R- CH = CH _{2}+ H _{2} O$
