Q. Upon heating with acidic $KMnO_{4}$, an organic compound produces hexan $- 1,6-$ dioic acid as the major product. The starting compound is

Solution:

The starting compound is cyclohexene, which upon heating with acidic $KMnO_4$ produces hexan $-1,-6- $ dioic acid as a major product.

Note Alkene on reaction with cold, aqueous solution of $KMnO_4$ produces vicinal glycols whereas, hot acidic solution of $KMnO_4$ oxidises alkenes to ketone which further gets oxidised to acids.
