Solution:

It is experimentally found that two current carrying conductors attract each other when the currents are in the same direction and repel each other when currents are in the opposite directions.
For $X$ and $Y$ two long parallel wires, the two wires experience force in the direction (as shown) according to Fleming's left hand rule.
