Q. Trichloroacetaldehyde was subjected to Cannizzaro’s reaction by using $NaOH.$ The mixture of the products contains sodium trichloroacetate ion and another compound. The other compound is

Aldehydes Ketones and Carboxylic Acids

Solution:

Cannizzaro’s reaction is given by aldehydes $\left(RCHO\right)$
lacking H at a-carbon or lacking a-carbon $\left(HCHO\right)$
With $NaOH,$ there is formation of acid salt $\left(RCHOO^{-}\right)$ by oxidation and alcohol $\left(RCH_2OH\right)$ by reduction.
