Q. Transformation in bacteria was first discovered by

Chhattisgarh PMTChhattisgarh PMT 2004

Solution:

Transformation is the means of sexual reproduction. The initial experiment on transformation was performed by F Griffith ($1928)$ of England, while he was working with two strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae. In generalized way the process of transformation involves an initial release of DNA of same bacteria into environment perhaps after their death and cell lysis. Other bacteria then can encounter this DNA and integrate it into their own genome recombination. Therefore, the cell whose DNA is released is called donor cell and which receives the DNA fragment is called recipient cell.
