Q. Tischenko reaction proceeds in the presence of

AMUAMU 2002

Solution:

Tischenko reaction All aldehyde on heating with aluminium alkoxide (ethoxide or isopropoxide) and anhydrous $AlCl _{3}$ or $ZnCl _{2}$ undergoes an intermolecular oxidation and reduction similar to Cannizaro reaction but the alcohol and acid instead of appearing as such, react to produce esters.
$\underset{\text{acetaldehyde}}{2 CH _{3} CHO} \xrightarrow[\text{anhy}AlCl_3]{ Al \left( OC _{2} H _{5}\right)_{3}} \underset{\text{ethyl acetate}}{CH _{3} COOC _{2} H _{5}}$

$\underset{\text { benzaldehyde }}{2 C _{6} H _{5} CHO } \xrightarrow[\text { anhy. } AlCl _{3}]{ Al \left( OC _{2} H _{5}\right)_{3}} \underset{\text { benzyl benzoate }}{ C _{6} H _{5} CH _{2} OOC \cdot C _{6} H _{5}}$
