All amino acids which form proteins are alpha amino acids with COOH (carboxyl group), $N H_{2}$ (amine group), H and a variable R group attached to a central carbon atom. They differ from each other in the orientation of R group, e.g., R group is 'H' in glycine, ' $C H_{3}$ ' in alanine and ' $C H_{2}OH$ ' in serine.
