Theory of pangenesis was given by Darwin in order to explain the transfer of new traits to germ cells. He believed that hereditary traits are carried by small structures called pangene or gemmules from individual cells to germ cells. Lamarck proposed theory of inheritance of acquired characters and theory of use and disuse of organs. Weismann proposed theory of germplasm which states that inheritance of characters from parents to offspring is mediated through germplasm. Hugo de Vries proposed mutation theory of evolution.
