Q. The volumes of gases $H _{2}, CH _{4}, CO _{2}$ and $NH _{3}$ adsorbed by $1 g$ of charcoal at $298 K$ are in the order

Surface Chemistry

Solution:

Greater the critical temperature of a gas, greater is the adsorption. Critical temperatures are as follows:

$NH _{3}(406 K ), CO _{2}(304 K ), CH _{4}(190 K )$ and $H _{2}(33 K )$

Thus, adsorption decreases from $NH _{3}$ to $H _{2}$ in this order :

$NH _{3}> CO _{2}> CH _{4}> H _{2}$
