Q. The values of standard oxidation potentials of following reactions are given below :
(i) $Zn \longrightarrow Zn ^{2+}+2 e^{-} ; E^{\circ}=0.762\, V$
(ii) $Fe \longrightarrow Fe ^{2+}+2 e^{-} ; E^{\circ}=0.440 \,V$
(iii) $Cu \longrightarrow Cu ^{2+}+2 e^{-} ; E^{\circ}=-0.345\, V$
(iv) $Ag \longrightarrow Ag ^{+}+e^{-} ; \quad E^{\circ}=-0.800\, V$
Which of the following is most easily reduced?

BHUBHU 2003

Solution:

Lower the axidation potential of the element easier will be its reduction. Compare the axidation potential of elements and find the answer.
$\because$ Ag has lowest oxidation potential among given choices.
$\therefore Ag$ is reduced most easily.
