Members of Chordata possess 3 fundamental characters at any stage of life:
$1.$ Notochord - Solid, mesodermal and later on develop into vertebral column.
$2.$ Dorsal hollow nerve cord (or dorsal tubular nerve cord or neural tube)
$3.$ Pharyngeal gill slits.
Post anal tail may or may not be present.
