Solution:

Ruby is $Al_2O_3$ in which Red colour is obtained when $Cr^{+3}$ is replacing $Al^{+3}$ ions in octahedral sites. Emerald is $Be_3Al_2 (SiO_3)_6$ in which green colour is obtained when $Cr^{+3}$ is replacing $Al^{+3}$ in octahedral site.
