Q. The total pressure of a mixture of $H _2$ and $O _2$ is $1.00$ bar. The mixture is allowed to react to form water which is completely removed to leave only pure $H _2$ at a pressure of $0.35$ bar. Assuming ideal gas behaviour and that all pressure measurements were made under the same conditions of temperature and volume. The mole fraction of $H _2$ in the original mixture is

Solution:

Let pressure of $O _2$ be ' $x$ '
$\therefore$ Pressure of $H _2=1-x$

$H _2$ remaining $=1-3 x =0.35$
$\therefore x =\frac{0.65}{3}$
$X_{O_2}=0.217 \simeq 0.22$
$X_{H_2}=0.78$
