Q. The standard reduction potential for $ Mg^{2+}/Mg $ is $ - 2.37 \,V $ and for $ Cu^{2+}/Cu $ is $ 0.337 $ . The $ E^{\circ} _{\text{cell}} $ for the following reaction is
$ Mg +Cu^{2+} \to Mg^{2+} +Cu $

MHT CETMHT CET 2009

Solution:

$E_{\text {cell }}^{\circ}=E_{\text {cathode }}^{\circ}-E_{\text {anode }}^{\circ}$

$=E_{\left( Cu ^{2+} / Cu \right)}^{\circ}-E_{\left( Mg ^{2+} / Mg \right)}^{\circ}=0.337-(-2.37) \,V$

$=2.7 \,V$
