Q. The standard electrode potentials of $Zn$ and $Ni$ are respectively $- 0.76\, V$ and $- 0.25\, V$. Then the standard emf of the spontaneous cell by coupling these under standard conditions is

KEAMKEAM 2015Electrochemistry

Solution:

The standard electrode potential of

$Zn\left(E^{\circ}_{\text{anode}}\right)=-0.76\, V$

The standard electrode potential of

$\text { Ni }\left(E^{\circ}_{\text {cathode}}\right)=-0.25$

From equation

$E_{\text {cell }}^{\circ} =E_{\text {(cathode) }}^{\circ}-E^{\circ} \text { (anode) } $

$=-0.25-(-0.76)=+0.51\, V$
