Q. The stability of $ BC{{l}_{3}} $ is higher as compared to $ TIC{{l}_{3}} $ is due to

CMC MedicalCMC Medical 2015

Solution:

$ BC{{l}_{3}} $ is stable as compared to $ \text{TIC}{{\text{l}}_{\text{3}}} $ because in $ BC{{l}_{3}} $ inert -pair effect is absent and due to which B shows +3 oxidation state. On moving down the group, the inert pair effect increases therefore, thallium shows +1 oxidation sate and this oxidation state is more stable than +3 oxidation state.
