Q. The "spin only" magnetic moment of $Ni^{2+}$ in aqueous solution would be [At No. of $Ni = 28$]

KCETKCET 2012The d-and f-Block Elements

Solution:

$Ni ^{2+}$ in aqueous solution refers to $\left[ Ni \left( H _{2} O \right)_{6}\right]^{2+} . Ni ^{2+}$ has following electronic orientation.

$\therefore $ Number of unpaired electrons $=2$

Spin only magnetic moment $=\sqrt{n(n+2)}$

$=\sqrt{2(2+2)}=\sqrt{8} \,BM $
