Q. The species in which the central atom uses $sp^2$-hybrid orbitals in its bonding is:

Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure

Solution:

In $CH^+_3$, carbon atom is in $sp^2$ -hybridized state
$H =\frac{1}{2} ( V + X - C + A)$
(a) $PH_3 = \frac{1}{2} (5 + 3) = 4$
$\Rightarrow sp^3$
(b) $NH_3 = \frac{1}{2} (5 + 3) = 4$
$\Rightarrow sp^3$
(c) $CH_3^+ = \frac{1}{2} ( 4 + 3 -1) = 3$
$\Rightarrow sp^2$
(d) $SbH_3 = \frac{1}{2} ( 5 + 3) = 4$
$\Rightarrow sp^3$
