Q. The source of complementary RNA required for RNA silencing is

NTA AbhyasNTA Abhyas 2020Biotechnology and its Applications

Solution:

The process of RNAi involves silencing of a specific mRNA due to a complementary ssRNA molecule that binds to mRNA and prevents the translation by forming dsRNA(silencing). The consequence was that the host became inhospitable for the parasite to survive and thus the host is protected. The complementary RNA could be obtained from an infecting virus having RNA based genome or from transposons which can replicate using an RNA intermediate. Transposons are sequences of nucleic acids which can change position within the genome, hence, also called mobile genetic elements.
