: Palisade parenchyma occurs immediately beneath the epidermis of the leaf and consists of one to three layers. Its main function is to carry out photosynthesis. Spongy parenchyma is situated just below the palisade parenchyma, consisting of loosely arranged and irregularly shaped cells with large intercellular spaces. It is also photosynthetic in nature but here lesser chloroplasts are present.
