Q. The shape of the molecule $ClF_3$ is

KVPYKVPY 2010Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure

Solution:

Central atom $Cl$ has seven valence electrons, out of which it forms $3$ bond pairs with fluorine and $2$ pairs of electrons remain non-bonded (lone pair). Thus, its shape will be $T$-shaped, where lone pairs occupy equatorial positions, so as to minimise the repulsion.
