Q. The root mean square velocity of a gas is doubled when the temperature is :

EAMCETEAMCET 1997

Solution:

Root mean square velocity of gas is given by $ {{U}_{rms}}=\sqrt{\frac{3RT}{M}}=\sqrt{\frac{3PV}{M}}=\sqrt{\frac{3P}{d}} $ From the above it is clear that r.m.s speed is doubled when the temperature increased four times.
