Q. The rms velocity of a gas at a certain temperature is $\sqrt{2}$ times than that of the oxygen molecules at that temperature. The gas can be

Kinetic Theory

Solution:

$v_{ rms } \propto \frac{1}{\sqrt{M_W}}$
$\Rightarrow \frac{v_1}{v_2}=\sqrt{\frac{M_{W_2}}{M_{W_1}}}$
$\Rightarrow \frac{v}{\sqrt{2} v}=\sqrt{\frac{M_{W_2}}{32}}$
$\Rightarrow M_{W_2}=16\left( CH _4\right)$
